PROJECT II: REPURPOSE

The task was clear and simple, but difficult. We were faced with choosing any body of work we had created in our history as writers. From there we had to not only resuscitate this dusty piece of work, but reimagine it in a new context (hence the “repurposing”). The piece could be anything, and we could repurpose it into anything…as long as we saw potential in it.

Normally, I appreciate creative freedom. And I consider myself relatively decisive, but this task daunted me. I changed my mind several times before sinking my teeth deep into the writing process.

I eventually settled on repurposing a cathartic journal entry from earlier in the year. The backstory: After almost missing my flight, I tried to find tranquility via writing. I took out my notebook when I sat down in my seat on the plane. I was jittery from the adrenaline and cortisol pumping through my body. My journal not only allowed me to calm myself, but it also gave me someone to talk to (I’m not really a “strike-up-a-conversation-with-the-stranger-sitting-next-to-you-on-an-airplane” kind of girl). I scribbled something to the effect of “Why am I always getting myself into these messes?! Gah!” More or less.

Weeks later I revisited the chicken-scratch rant and started to compile a list of the transportation-related mayhem I’ve experienced. It slowly and surely took form into something I can only describe as an “anti-travel guide.” The project is a list of tips, paired with anecdotal backstories, on what NOT to do when traveling.

Below is a link to the PDF of my final project. Next to it is my processes and reflections on the project.
